Midsomer Norton
The Town
Our property search company will be happy to show you the idyllic town of Midsomer Norton, in the Mendip Hills in North East Somerset. If you’re trying to get your property search started by pinpointing it on a map, ask our Recoco property finder to help – it’s 16 miles south east of Bristol and 10 miles south west of Bath, as our real estate buyers agent can confirm.
The River Somer runs the entire length of the town; ask your property buyer about flooding risks from climate change and increased levels of house building. Our property buying agent can help identify the areas most at risk, and work is underway on an alleviation scheme. The town is mainly home to light industry; your independent buying agents can outline activity at the local business parks. As our buyers agents can tell you, there is free parking on the High Street. Our Recoco property finder can also confirm many residents commute to nearby Bristol and Bath. And your Recoco buying agent can tell you Midsomer Norton’s climate is warmer and wetter than most of England.
Transport
Ask your property search company for details of transport links. The nearest railway station is Oldfield Park, just over 8 miles away, or Bath Spa is just over 8 and a half miles away - just ask your real estate buyers agent. The town lies on the B3355, which our boutique buying agents can confirm connects to the main Bath road. Bristol is the nearest airport - ask your independent buying agents for more details.
History
Several early churches give the town much of its character; our Recoco buying agent can confirm this includes the Grade II* Listed Catholic Church of the Holy Ghost. Other buildings to check out during your property search include the Palladian council offices, dating from the mid to late 1700s, and the Italianate Town Hall, dating from the mid 19th century. Our property buying agent can also show you buildings dating from the 15th century.
Education
Check with your real estate buyers agent about local educational opportunities, including the town’s four primary schools and two large secondary schools. First schools include Westfield Primary, Welton Primary, St. John’s Church of England, Midsomer Norton, and Longvernal Primary.
Buyers agents can help you find out about Norton Hill Secondary School, a Maths and Computing College since 2007, with a second specialism as a Language College. The school holds numerous awards holding the Artsmark Silver Award. Or ask our Recoco property finder about the Somer Valley branch of Bath College in nearby Westfield.
Leisure and Events
The Silver Street Local Nature reserve is built on the old Norton House estate, incorporating several ponds, broad-leaf woodland, and a restored wellhead.
Our property buying agent will be happy to outline the numerous activities on offer at South Wansdyke Leisure Centre, including swimming, a skate board park, and a children’s play area. Alternatively, check with your Recoco buying agent about sports options: local football clubs include Norton Hill Rangers, Welton Rovers F.C., and Welton Arsenal. There’s also a cricket club and a Rugby union team.
The former Palladium cinema is now a chain pub and there is a community cinema in the town hall. If you’re a property buyer who enjoys musical entertainment, there are free classical concerts on the first Friday of every month in the Town Hall, and your buyers agents can tell you about the regular concerts held by local choirs and brass bands. The Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Centre is located in a former goods shed in Midsomer Norton. There are occasional open weekends for steam engines. Ask our boutique buying agents about the town’s links to the West Country Carnival circuit, although it is not an official location.
Celebrity Connections
In the 1930s, world-famous children’s author Roald Dahl had quite a different profession – our property search company can tell you he sold kerosene in the town and surrounding area. Writer Evelyn Waugh’s family is also linked to the area.
Foodies’ Corner
Although small, Midsomer Norton has a range of eateries to appeal to any property buyer, including pizza, oriental, Greek, grill, Jacarandas coffee shop, and Italian La Campagna. Ask your independent buying agents if they have a particular recommendation.
Fun Fact
Our boutique buying agents will happily confirm the town is often mistaken for the location of TV series Midsomer Murders. The series is, however, mainly filmed in Oxfordshire and the Chilterns.
